Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Matt Kenseth were not able to qualify due to problems with inspections. The problems with inspections were routine and happen at every track on the circuit but for some reason Atlanta could not perform the re-inspections in a timely manner and those four past champions were unable to qualify. There were 9 others left out, but not big names in the sport. And one driver unable to qualify was due to a stolen car, yes, someone stole the number 44 car right out of a hotel parking lot.
