Tony Stewart winner at Sonoma road course, June 26, 2016.
“Smoke” drove His number 14 Mobile One Chevy around the Toyota of Denny Hamlin in the last turn to take the checkered flag and keep Himself in contention to make the Chase. Tony is not automatically in the Chase since He is not currently in the top 30 in points, which is a requirement. But it is very likely that He will move into the top 30 in points prior to the cut off to make the chase. However, just one DNF or something out of His control could keep Him out so His fans will stay on the edge of their seats waiting.
Stewart is a three time Sprint Cup champion and is retiring at the end of this season. He missed the first 11 races due to an off season injury to His back. Last season the eventual winner of the Sprint Cup, Kyle Busch was in a similar position after missing races and fighting to stay in the top 30 in points.
NASCAR put the top 30 provision in the rules to prevent a driver from getting a fluke win and not really being competitive enough to be in the Chase for the Sprint Cup.
